In the heart of Matera, a city renowned for its rich history and cultural heritage, an extraordinary educational initiative is taking shape. Welcome to the STEAM Innovation project, a groundbreaking endeavor funded by the Creative Europe programme, designed to transform learning by blending Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) with Art. This powerful fusion aims to spark creativity, enhance critical thinking, and make learning a thrilling adventure for young minds.
Led by four partners – Science View, Inquirium, Nuclio and Materahub – the project is set to innovate STEAM education through immersive activities in theatre, music, and tinkering and making through makerspaces. Within this ambitious framework, another worth mentioning initiative shines particularly bright in the Sassi area: The Clelia Rubino Academy.
STEAM Innovation: Redefining Education
Traditional education often isolates disciplines, but STEAM Innovation aims to bridge these gaps, inspiring students to explore science through art and play. Materahub, in collaboration with professors and PhD students from the Conservatory of Matera will develop musical activities that enrich the learning experience—demonstrating that knowledge is most effectively absorbed when it engages both the heart and mind. Before launching this music project in the schools of the area, Materahub would like to share another great example of STEAM education with its followers: the Clelia Rubino Academy cultivates an interdisciplinary mindset, encouraging students to discover the deep connections between different fields. This approach goes beyond rote memorization, fostering critical thinking and inclusivity. It empowers students who struggle with abstract concepts to experiment boldly and embrace challenges with confidence, essential skills for the future.
Honoring Clelia Rubino: A Legacy of Inspiration
The Clelia Rubino Academy is more than an educational initiative – it is a tribute to an extraordinary woman. Clelia Rubino was a brilliant engineer, a passionate advocate for mathematical education, and a loving mother. A lifelong believer in continuous learning, she always inspired others to trust in themselves and generously supported friends and family in making math more accessible and understandable.
When she tragically passed away from cancer in 2022 at just 38 years old, her legacy did not fade. Instead, it ignited a movement dedicated to making mathematics accessible, exciting, and deeply engaging for all.
Through the STEAM Innovation project, Clelia’s vision lives on, inspiring a new generation to see math not as an abstract puzzle but as a vivid, hands-on experience that connects to real life.
Bringing Math to Life with LEGO
At the Clelia Rubino Academy, learning is anything but conventional. By embracing a visual, manipulative, and inclusive approach grounded in scientific research, students don’t just study mathematical concepts, they build them, as demonstrated in the ‘Mathematics Through LEGO’ project.
Using LEGO bricks, they construct models that illustrate complex ideas, transforming numbers and equations into tangible, interactive experiences.
For instance, during a LEGO Mathematics workshop, students create geometric structures to calculate areas and perimeters in a fun, collaborative way. This hands-on approach enhances understanding and also helps reduce math anxiety by making abstract concepts tangible and engaging. Additionally, it fosters teamwork, problem-solving skills, and creativity, all essential for the modern world.
